In the past, I’ve had a bad habit of deciding I’m going to do something, announcing it to the world with the best of intentions, and then somehow, letting it get moved off of my “to-do” list week after week.
An example of that would be blogging.
About three months ago I wrote a blog post announcing that I was going to be to blogging weekly, and well . . .it hasn’t happened.
There’s no good excuse. There never is. I just sometimes find it difficult to prioritize my work over my client work.
I see the same type of thing with my clients and students. They start to get on a roll and they are doing all kinds of good things for themselves and then something happens. A big deadline, a vacation, some kind of family problem – it doesn’t really matter what it is, but everything goes to hell in a hand basket.
I find myself getting frustrated and feeling like I never have enough time in my day. But I do, if I choose to see it that way.
It’s easy to put everything else ahead of the things I need to do for myself and my business. Usually, everything comes to a head – I start feeling tired all of the time, I stop eating as well as I usually do, I don’t get exercise every day, I don’t get on my yoga mat, unless I’m teaching.
I like to call it “being human”.
As a yoga teacher, it is SO IMPORTANT for me to get on my mat as often as I can. How can I expect others to commit to the practice, when I’m not committing to my own practice?
I teach better when I’m getting on my mat. I feel more creative, I have more energy, I am calmer in stressful situations.
So why do we do this to ourselves?
What makes us stop doing the things that make us feel the best when things get a little crazy?
How do we stay the course and continue to care for ourselves as if we are our most important client?
It starts with giving ourselves a break and letting go of the judgement and blame. In the past, I had this little belief that showed up occasionally – something like, “if I don’t have time to do a full hour of yoga, I’ll just skip it”. Do you ever have thoughts like that?
We have all of these measurements in place that keep us from taking even a few minutes for self care, they keep us stuck in the “too busy” mindset.
I’m in the process of letting go of that belief. If I can only take 5 or 10 minutes to stretch and breathe today, I’m going to do it! If I find more time during my day to do more, that will just be a bonus!
The days of feeling bad about myself for only taking 5 or 10 minutes are gone, I’m going to be grateful for any amount of time I can take to stretch and breathe.
I’m inviting you to do the same.
I’m also not going to beat myself up for not blogging anymore. In the past, I’ve thought “I don’t have anything to write about, therefore, I won’t write anything”. So, next time you catch yourself thinking “I don’t have time . . ” just stop. Take five minutes to sit and breathe. Remind yourself that you are human, stretch your body in a way that feels good and let that thought go.
